The Story: |
THE HUNCHBACK centers on the infatuation of the alchemist Frollo for the gypsy girl Esmeralda, whom he tries to abduct using his servant Quasimodo, the hunchback bell-ringer of Notre-Dame. ![]() Esmeralda is rescued by Phoebus, the Captain of the guards, with whom she instantly falls in love. At a lover's tryst, they are spied upon by an insanely jealous Frollo, who, at the supreme moment of Phoebus' seduction of Esmeralda, falls upon Phoebus and stabs him. Esmeralda is accused of Phoebus' murder and condemned to death. Quasimodo, whom she has befriended, rescues her and hides her in the bell tower of Notre-Dame. ![]() Frollo tricks Esmeralda into leaving the sanctuary of the cathedral and has her arrested. He comes to her in the dungeons where he delivers his final ultimatum. She refuses his advances and is condemned to the gallows. Frollo ascends the tower of Notre-Dame to watch the horrifying spectacle, and in the moment of her death, goes mad. The hunchback kills him, hurling his body from the top of the cathedral tower, then hurries to where they have taken her body, the common grave at the hill of Montfaucon. There he lies down beside her and dies. |
